Zestril (Lisinopril)

Usage indications

Zestril is a drug used to treat heavy blood pressure unaccompanied or in combination with other drugs. It is used jointly with other drugs for heart failure management or in a post-heart attack period. It may also be used for other ailments upon your doctor’s advice.

Mode of application

Use Zestril upon your doctor’s prescription. Precise dosing instructions are indicated on the label on the drug.

Zestril may be taken regardless of meals.

You cannot take a double dose at a time.

Mechanism of action

Zestril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. Its function is to relax blood vessels which results in lower blood pressure and facilitates the blood pumping activity of the heart.

Missed doses

In case you miss a scheduled intake time, seek to take the drug immediately. If it is near the following intake time, leave the missed dose out and follow your regular intake plan. Do not take a double dose at once.

Overdose

If you suspect that you took too much of Zestril and feel extremely dizzy or light-headed, or fainting seek for immediate medical attention.

Keep in a dry dark place at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children.

Avoid to use Zestril if:

• you have allergy to any ingredient of it;
• you have an angioedemic history (swollen hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; hindered swallowing or breathing; hoarsened voice), including angioedema resulting from treatment with an ACE inhibitor;
• you are in your second or third pregnancy trimester;
• the patient is a child with strong kidney disorders.

Inform your doctor if you fall under any of the above.

Note:

• Avoid driving or performing other potentially unsafe activities until you examine your reaction to Zestril.
• Zestril may cause a severe side effect called angioedema. Inform your doctor immediately in case you experience swollen hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; hindered swallowing or breathing, or hoarsened voice.
• Zestril may not be efficient in black patients who also have greater risks to develop angioedema. Inform your health care provider if your symptoms fail toimprove or if they worsen.
• Dehydration, excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea may increase the risk of low blood pressure. Inform your health care provider immediately if any of these occur.
• Rarely, Zestril may decrease your body’s ability to fight infection. This risk may increase if you have other health disorders (e.g. kidney disorders, collagen vascular disease). Inform your doctor if you experience infection symptoms like fever, sore throat, rash, or chills.
• Warn your doctor or dentist of your receiving Zestril before you are provided with any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
• High blood pressure patients who take relevant drugs suffer from tiredness for a few weeks after they start treatment with Zestril. Take your medicine even if you may not feel normal. Inform your doctor about any new signs.
• If you have high blood pressure, avoid using over-the-counter drugs with stimulants including, among others, diet supplements or cold medicines. Address any questions or concerns to your doctor.
• Zestril may have negative impact on blood sugar in diabetes patients. Monitor blood sugar level and consult your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.
• You can have your blood pressure, blood electrolyte levels, heart function, or kidney or liver function tested in laboratory while taking Zestril. The said tests may be applied to control your state or check for side effects. Follow all doctor and lab appointments.
• Be cautious using Zestril in the elderly; due to their probably greater sesitivity to its effects.
• If Zestril is taken during pregnancy it may cause birth defects or fetal death. If you think you may be pregnant, immediately inform your. It is unknown if Zestril reaches breast milk. Stop breast-feeding if you receive Zestril.

Side Effects

Inform your doctor of these most COMMON side effects if they seem persistent or bother you:

• cough; diarrhea; dizziness; headache; tiredness.

Consult your doctor immediately about any of these SEVERE side effects:

• Strong allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; heavy breathing; tightness in chest; swollen mouth, face, lips, or tongue; hoarsened voice); chest pain; dark urine; decreased urination; difficulty swallowing; infection (eg, fever, chills, persistent sore throat); inadequate heartbeat; stomach disorders (with or without nausea or vomiting); low blood pressure signs (e.g. fainting, severe dizziness, lightheadedness); yellowish skin or eyes.
